Civic Action Prayer

prayer.jpgAlmighty and eternal God, you have established Man that he might work for your Glory.  You have given us a bright new country, a shining light on a hill, so full of hope and at the same time so tragically marred by injustice.

We ask your blessing on those who have risen to public office in our land.

We pray for the President, that he may conduct the affairs of national government with wisdom, bravery and justice.

We pray for members of Congress, that they may truly represent the needs of the people, and work in harmony for the advancement of all men.

We pray for the judges who rule the courts, that they may balance justice with mercy, and civil law with divine mandate.

Grant our state and local leaders the gifts of wisdom, justice, counsel, and fortitude so they may create laws with a well-formed conscience, focused on the dignity of every human person in pursuit of the common good and the protection of the weak and vulnerable, avoiding needless dispute and fostering within an urgent desire to effect just public policy.

Let them never forget the unborn children in the womb, who cry out for mercy.  Let their work always and only be turned towards welcoming them in life and protecting them in law.

May they understand the difference between serving the public and killing the public.

Grant to all our citizens the gift of respect for lawful authority, justly exercised, that we may live as a united people, one nation under God.

Oh Lord God, bless our nation, founded on the principle that all men are free and endowed by their Creator with the unalienable rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.  Grant us the grace to pursue this mighty vision with confidence that the victory over death has already been won through the combat of the Cross and is now established as your reign in Heaven.

We ask this through Christ our Lord,

Amen.
