CPLC Executive Director Karen Garnett was interviewed on Wednesday, April 22nd by three local TV stations, CBS Channel 11, ABC Channel 8 and CW Channel 33 about the surprise FDA announcement to make the morning after pill (MAP) available to 17 year old minors without a doctors prescription.

17 year old minors would have to show an ID card verifying their age before purchasing.  Men over 17 would also be able to purchase MAP as well.

We were grateful for the opportunity to speak to these TV stations about this issue that so strongly concerns women's health, and yet at the same time, we wanted to make these clips available publicly and provide some commentary on them, as not all of the information in the videos is entirely accurate.

The main points we would like to make about MAP are the following:

1)  MAP Can Cause an Abortion:  The makers of MPA, Preven, and scientific studies conclude that one of the three possible effects of MAP is to prevent the fertilized egg from implanting in the womb of the mother.  The fertilized egg, of course, is a human being with a distinct DNA and with a little time and nourishment, will one day be born.

2)  There are no long-term studies that show the effect of increased use of steroids on a woman's body.  MAP acts like a birth control pill except at a much higher level.  If we object to male athletes using steroids because of their effect then why is it OK for minor girls to use it?

3)  There are no studies that indicate use of MAP will reduce the numbers of abortions or unwanted pregnancies.  Studies show that either the rate remains the same or may increase.

Either way, these points were not made clear during the interviews even though Karen mentioned all of them.  The level at which those who support MAP are willing to go is indicated in the answer of a Planned Parenthood spokeswoman who said that minors need access to MAP because they either "don't have parents" or "don't know where there parents are."
