January 31, 2013

Dear Parish Pro-Life Coordinator,

Greetings and blessings to you and yours.  First let me say thank you.  Thanks to you and your devoted parish families, we saw record numbers witness for life on January 19 to mark the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.  (Pictures and video available at prolifedallas.org/roe.)  In the face of this tragic memorial, we reflected on the millions lost to abortion but also celebrated the amazing accomplishments for life since that dark day when abortion on demand became the law of the land.  Bishop Farrell reminded us that we cannot lose hope; that our voices are and continue to be heard for the precious unborn.

The new year brings with it the 83rd Texas Legislative Session and another opportunity to let your voice be heard at Catholic Advocacy Day.  On April 9, Texas Bishops and Catholics from throughout the state will join together for the 2013 Catholic Advocacy Day at the Capitol in Austin to advocate for policies promoting life, family, education, charity and social justice.  To prepare for this important day, we are offering a special advocacy training following the next Parish Pro-Life Coordinators Meeting (please note change in date and time) on Saturday, February 16.  The ParCoor Meeting will begin at 10 a.m. at Prince of Peace in Plano in Las Mercedes Rm.

The February 16 meeting schedule is as follows:

10 a.m. to noon:  regular Parish Pro-Life Coordinators Meeting
12 noon - 12:30 p.m.:  light lunch served
12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.:  advocacy training (open to the public – friends from Catholic Charities and the St. Vincent de Paul Society will be joining us for the training portion)

It is the Diocese of Dallas' goal to have 301 advocates from our diocese at the Capitol this year.  We hope each and every one of you who serve as Parish Pro-Life Coordinators will help our diocese realize that goal!  Jennifer Carr Allmon from the Texas Catholic Conference, the public policy voice of the Texas Bishops, will be presenting at the advocacy training on the 16th.  Learn more and register for the training at dallascatholicadvocacy.org.

The regular portion of the Parish Pro-Life Coordinators Meeting will include important details about The Bishop’s 20th Annual Catholic Pro-Life Dinner on April 6.  As you have likely heard by now, our keynote speaker will be Pattie Mallette – the mother of pop music sensation Justin BieberHer powerful pro-life story of hope and redemption is not to be missed!  Packets of information and promotional posters and yard signs will be distributed at the meeting.  Learn more about the dinner and reserve your tables at prolifedallas.org/dinner.

I encourage all of you to come to this very informative meeting and the advocacy training on February 16.   A light lunch will be provided.  If you cannot attend, please send a representative.  Also, if you have not already, please be sure to pick up the Roe Memorial yard signs from your parish office to return at the Parish Pro-Life Coordinators Meeting (or to the CPLC office at 14200 Midway, Suite 120, Dallas).  This helps greatly in reducing our costs!

This month, we are also kicking off another Project Life series, this time at St. Patrick in Dallas. The classes will be each Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Parish Center, beginning February 7 through April 11 (excluding March 14 and 28).  Anyone who wants to learn more about life issues is encouraged to attend.  The series will open with a screening of the film BloodMoney on Thursday, January 31.  Visit prolifedallas.org/projectlife for more information about the 2013 series and how to bring the curriculum to your parish.

Finally, please mark your calendars for these additional upcoming events:

In closing and as we continue looking forward to the year ahead, let us find inspiration from one of the first liturgical celebrations of this new year – the Feast of the Epiphany commemorating the arrival of the Magi who followed a distant star that led them to the Christ Child.  Despite the humble setting in which they found Him, they recognized the Infant to be the King of Kings, and falling on their knees, they worshiped Him, offering their finest gifts.  We should all do the same, not only during the Christmas season, but all year long.  We should always present Our Lord with the very best that we have and the best that we are.  Your constant defense of life is certainly one of the best gifts that you can offer to Jesus.

May God’s blessings be upon you and your family as you give your very best and thereby strengthen our commitment to the pro-life cause.

Thanks for all you do for Life and God bless,

David Carr
Director of Parish Coordination
