Location(s): Lynch Auditorium at the University of Dallas, Irving

The University of Dallas and UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas are teaming up to present an inaugural lecture that addresses ethics and morality in medicine on Friday, April 20, at 7 p.m. in UD’s Lynch Auditorium. Guest speaker, Dr. Farr Curlin, who is an associate professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, will explore the effect of religious, theological and philosophical issues on the practice of medicine in a talk titled, “Professional Commitments or Personal Impositions? Conscience and Conscientious Refusals in the Practice of Medicine.” This event is free and open to the public.

“It is very important to discuss conscience in connection with the practice of medicine,” said William Brownsberger, University of Dallas associate professor of theology. “This lecture is a start to a conversation about these and other issues and it brings to the table different, valuable perspectives.”

Curlin is a nationally-recognized speaker and conference organizer on the intersection of religion and the practice of medicine. He is a hospice and palliative care physician, researcher and medical ethicist at the University of Chicago. Curlin and his colleagues have written numerous articles published in medicine and bioethics publications, including “Religion, Conscience and Controversial Clinical Practices,” which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
